In 2026, the United States celebrates its 250th anniversary — the Semiquincentennial — and there is no better place to be part of it than Washington, DC, an easy day trip from our historic Leesburg homes. From free Smithsonian exhibitions to Fourth of July on the National Mall, here is how to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime celebration. Getting to DC from Leesburg

Washington, DC is about a 45-minute drive from our homes. For big event days like the Fourth of July, the easiest option is Metro’s Silver Line, which runs from the Loudoun and Ashburn stations straight into the heart of the city — no traffic or downtown parking to worry about. We recommend arriving early on major event days and wearing comfortable shoes for the National Mall.

Smithsonian: “Our Shared Future: 250”

The Smithsonian is marking the anniversary with exhibitions, events, and public programs across its museums — nearly all free and clustered around the National Mall. Standouts include “In Pursuit of Life, Liberty & Happiness” (250 Objects, 250 Stories) at the National Museum of American History, the “Unhidden Heroines” augmented-reality experience on the National Mall, and “250 Years of the U.S. Postal Service” at the National Postal Museum. Smithsonian Folklife Festival Goes National

Museums & Exhibitions Downtown
